Royal Liver Assurance

Royal Liver Assurance is a multi-billion pound operation, looking after over 1 million members throughout the UK and Ireland, but its beginnings were more humble. Founded by a small group of working men from Liverpool in the Lyver Inn on 24 July 1850, the Liverpool Burial Society as it was then known, was set up to provide for the decent interment of deceased members.

At the time Liverpool’s port was attracting thousands of the poor and destitute who had little or no provisions in place in the event of their death. The newly founded Society really struck a chord with these people - for as little as a penny a week, members whatever the hardships they might suffer in life °© were at least assured of avoiding the dreaded pauper’s grave. In the early days the Society’s reputation for integrity grew so rapidly, that by 1857 the Society was occupying its fourth head office, from where it was overseeing expansion to many other parts of the United Kingdom and Ireland.

At the end of the 1890’s a decision was taken to build a new head office building to reflect the pride felt by those who worked for the society. The result was the Royal Liver Building, built at the Pier Head in Liverpool in only three years and opened on 19 July 1911. At the time of its construction this majestic building perfectly expressed the Society’s confidence in the future. Today, restored by extensive refurbishment, it remains a world famous landmark.

Merseyside Disability Federation

MDF was established in March 2000 as result of consultation across voluntary and community sector groups working alongside disabled people as to their needs in fulfilling the individual aims and objectives of their organisations. There was an acknowledged lack of baseline information relating to disability across Merseyside and the sources of research, information, support and advice available. MDF was established to address this within a systematic, specialist and disability-led framework.

MDF is driven by the needs of the membership, and consults continuously on the work it is undertaking and helps to see that issues of concern to those groups are taken into account in strategic public policy-making. MDF operates within the social model of disability, which sees disability as resulting from the social, economic and physical barriers that people with physical or mental impairments face.

MDF key activities include:

Identifying and reporting on gaps in service provision for disabled people.

Promoting and supporting voluntary and community sector organisations of and for disabled people through capacity building and networking.

Forming working partnerships and encouraging joint working amongst voluntary, private and public sector organisations.

Developing strategies and giving an informed view on behalf of member organisations.

Undertaking a research programme to establish baseline information relating to disabled people across Merseyside

Making research findings widely known so that they can influence decision-making bodies.
