Oxinium. Changing implants forever.

Oxinium* (oxidized zirconium) isn't a new implant. It's a new material, exclusively available from Smith & Nephew. Wear debris can be greatly reduced . The nickel content is almost nil, addressing the needs of the nickel-sensitive patient. Hardness, lubricity and abrasion resistance are all improved. Initially,  Oxinium is available in two already proven knee systems - Genesis II and Profix. Because of its superior hardness, smoothness and resistance to scratching and abrasion, you can expect an Oxinium replacement to be long-lasting and allow you to resume normal activities with less fear of undergoing a repeat replacement surgery.

Oxinium™

A longer-lasting alternative for hip and knee replacement

As a person suffering from osteoarthritis or another form of degenerative joint disease, there is a strong possibility that one day you may need knee or hip replacement surgery. Prior to your treatment , you'll have many questions for your orthopaedic surgeon:

• Will the pain go away after surgery?

• How much movement will I get back?

• Will I be able to resume my normal activities?

• How long will It take me to recover?

• How long will the implant last? ... and dozens more questions!

But a question that you probably are not thinking about asking is what kind of implant device you will be receiving. What is it made of, and why is your surgeon using a particular kind of device? Not all implant devices are made of the same material. Due to significant advancements in technology, metallurgy and process, there now is a revolutionary new material for implant devices that, quite literally, is " As Strong As An Ox".

Oxinium™ (oxidized zirconium is the name of the material) from Smith & Nephew is now being used in hip and knee replacements. Because of its superior hardness, smoothness and resistance to scratching and abrasion, you can expect an Oxinium™ joint replacement to be longer -lasting, which should allow you to resume normal activities with less fear of undergoing repeat revision surgery.
