Common questions asked

How long will my hip replacement last?

90% of total hip replacements are functioning well at 10 years and many may last 15 to 20 years. Factors that may reduce the life of your hip are high impact activities (running, jogging and weight lifting) and your body weight.

Will my legs be the same length after my operation?

Your surgeon will aim to restore your normal leg length but this is not always possible to correct. Some difference in leg length may be due to the soft tissue (e.g. muscle) shortening, because of the altered posture that people have before surgery, to avoid pain. If this is the case, it may take several months before the legs feel as if they are the same length.

Will I have a limp following my operation?

If the muscles do not heal properly then this may result in a slight limp but remember it can take up to a year to recover fully from your operation.

Will I manage stairs after my operation?

Before your discharge home, the physiotherapist will teach and assess you on the correct technique.

Will my leg be swollen after the operation?

It is usual for your operated leg to swell and feel heavy. This can last up to six weeks.
